Medical Consultations
There are many different causes of hair loss, ranging from stress to hormonal and autoimmune disorders.
It is essential to have a consult with your doctor to determine the cause of your hair loss before embarking on any hair loss treatment regime.
RT Hair Restoration can help you determine the cause of your hair loss and help provide the best advice on which thair loss treatment would be best suited to your individual circumstances.
Most often the hair loss that we see is caused by Androgenic Alopecia or Male/Female pattern baldness.
Several different hair loss treatment options are available.
Treatment of Adrogenic Alopecia
Androgenid Alopecia is a progressive disorder which will continue thoughout your life. Our role is to help educate you about this journey and help you maintain a healthy head of hair for longer.
Prescription Medications for Androgenic Alopecia have two main objectives.
- To slow down the loss of your existing hair follicles
- To help maintain your existing follicles in the active growth phase. This will help your hair to appear fuller and thicker.
Unfortunately there is no treatment to stop hair loss from Androgenic Alopecia completely. We can only slow down the process.
Once your lose your hair follicles completely and you are balding, there is no treatment to recover the lost follicles.
It is our goal to see you keep your existing hair for as long as possible. For this to happen you must seek preventative treatment as soon as possible once you first notice hair loss.
Additionally you must maintain your treatment throughout your life or for as long as you wish to keep a full head of hair. There is no such thing as a once off treatment for Androgenic Alopecia.
If you are considering a hair transplant in the future it is imperative that you are taking a prescription medication to slow down the progress of hair loss that occurs with Androgenic Alopecia.
Alternative Treatments for Adrogenic Alopecia
A combination of prescription treatments and PRP / Regenera Activa therapy is often the best approach for hair loss because it addresses the issue from multiple angles.
Prescription medications work by slowing hair loss and stimulating new growth, while PRP and Regenera Activa therapy enhances the hair follicles’ natural regeneration process.
This dual approach maximizes the chances of retaining existing hair and promoting new growth, leading to more comprehensive and lasting results.

Why is it important to tackle hair loss in the early stages?
Tackling hair loss in the early stages is crucial because it allows for more effective treatment and better outcomes. Early intervention can slow down or even halt the progression of hair loss, preserving existing hair and increasing the chances of regrowth. As hair follicles shrink and become inactive over time, they become more difficult to revive, making treatment less effective if delayed. Additionally, addressing hair loss early can prevent significant thinning and maintain a fuller appearance, which can be vital for self-esteem and confidence.
RT Hair Restoration can help you diagnose the cause of your hair loss as well as offer effective hair loss treatment in Adelaide.
Hair Loss Treatment for Women.
Understanding Hair Loss in Women
Hair loss in women is a common but often distressing issue, with causes that can range from hormonal changes and stress to underlying medical conditions. Unlike men, who typically experience a receding hairline or bald patches, women usually notice a diffuse thinning across the scalp. This difference in pattern and underlying causes means that hair loss treatment for women requires a tailored approach.
Causes of Hair Loss in Women
Hormonal Changes: Hormones play a significant role in hair growth and loss. Women may experience hair thinning during pregnancy, after childbirth, during menopause, or due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Hormonal imbalances can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to increased shedding and thinning.
Stress: Emotional or physical stress can trigger hair loss in women, often causing a condition known as telogen effluvium, where hair prematurely enters the shedding phase.
Nutritional Deficiencies: A lack of essential nutrients, such as iron, vitamin D, and protein, can lead to weakened hair follicles and increased hair loss.
Medical Conditions: Thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, and certain medications can contribute to hair loss in women.
Genetics: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a hereditary condition similar to male pattern baldness but usually results in overall thinning rather than bald spots.
Treatment Options for Hair Loss in Women
Topical Treatments:
- Minoxidil (Rogaine): The only FDA-approved treatment for female pattern hair loss, minoxidil is a topical solution that helps to stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp. It can slow hair loss and promote regrowth in some women.
Oral Medications:
- Spironolactone: Often prescribed to women with hair loss due to hormonal imbalances, spironolactone is an anti-androgen that reduces the effects of male hormones (androgens) that can contribute to hair thinning.
- Hormone Therapy: For women going through menopause or experiencing hormonal fluctuations, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help stabilize hormone levels and reduce hair loss.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy:
- PRP therapy involves using the patient’s own blood plasma, enriched with platelets, to stimulate hair follicles and promote new growth. It’s particularly effective for women with thinning hair, as it boosts the health and density of existing follicles.
Nutritional Supplements:
- Supplements such as biotin, iron, and vitamin D can help improve hair health, particularly in women with deficiencies. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for maintaining healthy hair.
Hair Transplant Surgery:
- For women with localized hair loss or significant thinning, hair transplantation may be an option. This involves relocating healthy hair follicles from one part of the scalp to areas with thinning hair. However, it’s less commonly performed in women due to the diffuse nature of their hair loss.
Lifestyle and Stress Management:
- Since stress can significantly impact hair health, incorporating stress-reducing practices such as mindfulness, yoga, and regular exercise can help mitigate hair loss. Ensuring a balanced diet and proper hair care routines also play a crucial role.
Psychological Support and Counseling
Hair loss can be emotionally challenging, particularly for women, due to societal pressures regarding appearance. Counseling and support groups can be valuable resources for women experiencing hair loss, helping them to cope with the psychological impact and make informed decisions about their treatment options.
Consultation and Personalized Treatment Plans
Given the variety of causes and treatments, it’s essential for women to consult with a specialist who can diagnose the underlying cause of hair loss and recommend a personalized treatment plan. This may include a combination of topical treatments, oral medications, lifestyle changes, and possibly advanced therapies like PRP.
Hair Loss Treatment for Men
Understanding Hair Loss in Men
Hair loss in men is commonly attributed to androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. This condition is characterized by a gradual thinning of hair, often starting at the hairline and crown, leading to receding hairlines and bald spots. Hair loss can also be caused by factors such as stress, medical conditions, and lifestyle choices.
Common Causes of Hair Loss in Men
Genetics: Androgenetic alopecia is primarily hereditary, influenced by genetic factors and the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair follicles to shrink and produce finer hair over time.
Hormonal Changes: Elevated levels of DHT lead to hair follicle miniaturization, contributing to pattern baldness. Hormonal imbalances or fluctuations can also exacerbate hair loss.
Stress: Physical or emotional stress can trigger telogen effluvium, a condition where hair follicles prematurely enter the shedding phase.
Medical Conditions: Conditions like thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, and certain infections can cause hair loss in men. Medications used for other health issues can also have hair loss as a side effect.
Lifestyle Factors: Poor diet, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption can negatively impact hair health and contribute to hair loss.
Treatment Options for Hair Loss in Men
Medications:
- Finasteride (Propecia): An oral medication that inhibits the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT, reducing hair follicle shrinkage and slowing hair loss. It is effective for many men, particularly in the early stages of hair loss.
- Minoxidil (Rogaine): A topical solution that stimulates hair growth by improving blood flow to the scalp and enlarging hair follicles. It’s often used in combination with other treatments for enhanced results.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy:
- PRP therapy uses the patient’s own blood, enriched with platelets, to promote hair growth. The growth factors in PRP stimulate dormant hair follicles and enhance hair density, making it a popular option for men seeking non-surgical treatments.
Hair Transplant Surgery:
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): A minimally invasive procedure where individual hair follicles are extracted from a donor site and implanted into thinning or balding areas. FUE is known for its natural-looking results and minimal scarring.
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): Involves removing a strip of skin from the donor area, dissecting it into follicular units, and transplanting these units to the balding areas. FUT can be suitable for cases requiring larger grafts but may leave a linear scar.
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT):
- LLLT uses low-level lasers to stimulate hair follicles and improve hair growth. This non-invasive treatment increases cellular metabolism and blood flow, promoting thicker and healthier hair.
Lifestyle and Nutritional Adjustments:
- A healthy diet rich in essential nutrients like vitamins B, D, and E, zinc, and iron can support hair health. Reducing stress through regular exercise, adequate sleep, and relaxation techniques can also be beneficial.
Hair Loss Concealers and Products:
- For immediate cosmetic solutions, products like hair fibers, powders, and sprays can help conceal thinning areas and improve the appearance of hair density.
Personalized Treatment Plans
Given the range of causes and treatments, it is crucial for men to consult with a specialist to determine the most effective approach. A thorough evaluation of the underlying cause of hair loss will guide the development of a personalized treatment plan, often combining medications, therapies, and lifestyle changes for optimal results.
